Sensitive information, possibly including student information, may have been compromised in the Honeoye Falls-Lima Central School District.
According to HF-L Superintendent Gene Mancuso at a press conference on September 19, students hacked his account between September 17 and September 19 which is after students received school-issued computers. The district put out a letter to parents and staff saying that the district discovered that someone had unlawfully accessed an administrative user account. The district further stated in the letter that the hacker accessed the schooltool student information management system, but that it is confident no records were changed.
Mancuso said that the students involved were able to look at some things in schooltool records, but not change anything in those records. District officials know who the individuals are and they have been dealt with according to the Code of Conduct, which includes having their computer usage limited. The district noticed the breach on September 19 and immediately changed all staff network passwords and launched an internal investigation to determine whether any sensitive information was compromised. It also notified the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department which has launched a criminal investigation.
The letter states that “The District is conducting a thorough review of the potentially affected records and information and will notify you directly if you or your child’s record was unlawfully accessed. We apologize for any inconvenience that this issue may cause you or your family.”
The investigation is ongoing, both by the district and by the Sheriff’s Office.
