Wheatland-Chili’s 2022 Drama Club production of “The Addams Family” was recognized in several categories at the Rochester Broadway Theatre League’s 24th Annual Stars of Tomorrow Recognition Ceremony on May 5.
The school’s show received Excellence in Production Crew, Excellence in Production Design and Overall Excellence in Performance in a Leading Role for Scout Brandes as “Morticia Addams” and Josh Lewis as “Gomez Addams”.
Brandes and Lewis are among select students who are now eligible to compete in the “Stars of Tomorrow NYC Bound” competition on Thursday, May 26, for a chance to represent Rochester, NY at the National High School Musical Theatre Awards/Jimmy Awards in New York City.
“Last night was an exciting evening for our Wheatland-Chili students. I am very pleased with all their recognition, and it was well deserved. I am extremely proud of the cast and crew and look forward to seeing Scout and Josh compete on May 26 in the NYC Bound competition,” said Jason Ford, Artistic Director for “The Addams Family”.
How those recognized were selected:
Adjudicators come to each high school show and rate the acting ensemble, dance ensemble, singing ensemble, production crew, production design (this is a new category), and then also look at the leads in each production. After the show closes, those involved with the production receive reports that highlight all of these elements. Each category has 5-6 areas, and the production is rated on each one. In order to receive the recognition in a category, the production has to attain a certain level of scoring. The Wheatland-Chili production of “The Addams Family” scored very well in the categories in which it was acknowledged.
Stars of Tomorrow NYC Bound (a NHSMTA Local Competition), celebrated its inaugural season in 2009. Select Leading role award recipients from RBTL’s annual Stars of Tomorrow Recognition Ceremony, are eligible to participate in this competition at the Auditorium Theatre. Participants are narrowed down by appointed judges until two performers are selected to represent Rochester, NY in a national competition in New York City; the National High School Musical Theatre Awards (NHSMTA) / Jimmy Awards.
The top two overall winning performers at the National High School Musical Theatre Awards are selected by a panel of experts following five days of musical theater rehearsals, master classes, private coaching and interviews with theater professionals. Based on their skill level and professional goals, students are eligible for college scholarships, professional internships, career coaching and opportunities for auditions.
