The safety course is designed to instruct students in proper weapon handling, safe firearms storage, equipment selection, firearms nomenclature, weapon maintenance, shooting fundamentals as well as laws and responsibilities.

The course will be held once a month at the Emergency Operations Center at the Hamptons Corners facility and will last four hours. The class is available to anyone over 18 years of age that resides in or owns property in Livingston County. The cost of the class is $25 and participants must pre-register. Instructors are NYS Division of Criminal Justice certified Firearms Instructors.

“This is a great opportunity for those that have never had any formal training in the safe handling of firearms to receive that training,” stated Sheriff Dougherty. “The training is made available by highly trained Livingston County Deputy Sheriffs. If you have just received or you are considering getting a NYS pistol permit, I would encourage you to sign up.”

Residents of other counties are urged to contact there local officials for dates, times, and requirements for firearms safety courses in your area.
