The Lima Christian Girls Varsity Basketball team played very well in its Section V Tournament game, but came up short to end the season.
LCS, which earned the #9 seed, bowed to #8 Lyndonville 46-37 in the Class D first round game on February 25. The Lady Saints opened the game strong to take a 12-9 lead after the first quarter. Lima Christian had another good performance in the second quarter with 11 points to hang onto a 23-20 advantage at halftime. Lyndonville ignited its offense in the third quarter with 18 points to jump ahead 38-33 as the game went into the fourth period. The Tigers pulled away in the final stanza. Brielle Hammond registered 10 points with eight rebounds. Alyssa Marsh swished 10 points with seven rebounds. Sophy Britton netted 5 points, Molly Teitsworth 5, Sophia Moses 4 and Abby Dils 3.
“The girls did a tremendous job,” coach Val Coykendall said. “Their big girl was a key factor in the first half and another player took over in the second half. Alyssa’s ankle injury bothered her, particularly in rebounding, and they outrebounded us. Once Lyndonville got the lead, they were very disciplined in the fourth quarter.”
Lima Christian finished with a 10-11 record this season. There were two seniors on the squad.
“The girls had a good season,” Coykendall said. “They worked hard and improved both individually and as a team. A highlight was Alyssa becoming the only Lima Christian player with 2,000 points for her career.”
Sophy Britton played on varsity for six years. A co-captain, Britton started at guard and she scored 70 points (fifth on the team) with 93 rebounds (fourth on the team), 71 assists (led the team), 48 steals (third on the team) and 16 blocks (second on the team).
Brielle Hammond competed for five seasons on varsity. A captain, Hammond was a starter and garnered 92 points (second on the team), 169 rebounds (second on the team), 49 steals (second on the team), 22 assists (fourth on the team) and 13 blocks (third on the team).
