During the month of April, the Lima chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will be honoring local military children with “Purple Up!” displays at area libraries, in celebration of the Month of the Military Child.
This month-long celebration was created in 1986, to honor and recognize the sacrifices made by military families, especially the dependent children of military members. The color purple was chosen as the designated color for the month, since purple is the combination color of all the military branches – Air Force, Navy and Coast Guard blue, Army green and Marine red. Purple Up Day is observed every year on April 15, when everyone is encouraged to wear purple to show support for military children everywhere.
The Ska-Hase-Ga-O DAR chapter’s “Purple Up!” displays can be found at the following libraries – the Avon Free Public Library, Caledonia Library, Geneseo Public Library, Lima Public Library, and the Livonia Public Library – and include small gift bags available for free to any military children. Each bag includes a purple crayon, a blank notecard and a special handwritten message from the Ska-Hase-Ga-O chapter. For more information about these kits or the DAR, contact skahasegao@gmail.com.
