As part of electric system upgrades to ensure reliability for customers, National Grid has scheduled a power outage for the Genesee region on Saturday, January 6. The outage, to take place from approximately 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., is necessary so that crews can complete critical infrastructure repairs that require replacement of two aging structures that support a transmission line.

Customers and local officials will receive direct communications from National Grid notifying them of the urgent nature of the repairs and outage, which is expected to affect around 7,300 customers in Avon, Caledonia, Lima, and Livonia in Livingston County, Bloomfield and West Bloomfield in Ontario County, and Henrietta, Honeoye Falls, Mendon, and Rush in Monroe County.

“We understand the inconvenience of an outage of this length at this time of year,” said National Grid Regional Director Ken Kujawa. “The need to address these structures is urgent and came to light in recent weeks during work related to extensive electric system upgrades our crews are conducting in the area. The work requires skills of many line and construction workers who are committed to the safe, reliable delivery of energy to our Genesee region customers. We’re grateful to our customers and local officials who provided feedback regarding the best date and time to safely complete this project, and we look forward to doing so on Jan 6.”

Warming centers will be available at the following locations during the outage. Electricity & Generator Safety

• Generators used to supply power during an outage must be operated outdoors to prevent the buildup of deadly carbon monoxide. Before operating a generator, be sure to disconnect from National Grid’s system by shutting off the main breaker, located in the electric service panel. Failure to do this could endanger our crews and your neighbors.
• Customers who depend on electrically powered life support equipment, such as a respirator, should contact us at 1-800-642-4272 for information on requesting designation as a life support customer. In a medical emergency, always dial 911.
• Keep working flashlights and an extra supply of batteries in your home and be sure to charge all electronic devices.
• Please use caution when driving near utility crews.
• Be sure to check on elderly family members, neighbors and others who may need assistance during an outage.

Town of Mendon Supervisor John Moffitt and Village of Honeoye Falls Mayor Rick Milne put out a statement on the outage earlier last week.

They stated that close to 2,900 addresses within the village of Honeoye Falls and the town of Mendon will be affected. In a situation where these structures failed, the area could be without power for upwards of 48-hours.

They wrote, “While the timing for a project such as this is never good, taking a pro-active approach now is the best option. It is important for those with special power needs, i.e., Medical or Oxygen feeding units, or simply those that may be impacted greater than others to colder temperatures to prepare for their electrical power to be out for this time. National Grid has been working to communicate with many of our businesses, banks, and facilities that house individuals with special needs. Residents that will be affected should also be receiving notices over the next few days, but we are confident that some will either be missed or will not review the notice received.”

“Please be prepared to be without electrical power on that day, please prepare now to shelter elsewhere if necessary. Or simply prepare your home as best as possible. Please reach out to those you may feel are vulnerable to this situation and assist where possible.”

Along with the warming centers mentioned above, additional sites will be considered as needed.

Both Moffitt and Milne said to please reach out to them if you need further information on warming sites or have any concerns. Note as well that RG&E (Rochester Gas and Electric) Customers are not affected by this outage.
Lima Town Supervisor Mike Falk and Lima Mayor John Skiptunas are also taking a proactive approach in trying to notify residents. Skiptunas notes that the Lima Ambulance Chief has put up some maps on the Lima Volunteer Ambulance Corps Facebook page with streets highlighted and a list of addresses (based on information provided by National Grid) that will be affected.

Honeoye Falls Marketplace put out a notice on its Facebook page stating that the Honeoye Falls loction will be open from 4-8 p.m. with very limited perishable department availability due to the outage. The Mendon Meadows location will not be affected and will be open from 7 a.m.-8 p.m.
