The Honeoye Falls-Lima Board of Education will vote on the recommendation regarding the District becoming a member of Monroe One BOCES Urban-Suburban Inter-District Transfer Program on December 19, 2017.
The District previously appointed a committee to study and make recommendations regarding the District becoming a member of Monroe One BOCES Urban-Suburban Inter-District Transfer Program. After nine months of study and two public hearings, the committee presented a recommendation to join the Urban-Suburban Program on October 24, 2017.
“The Board of Education would like to thank the numerous stakeholders who contributed to completing this study and recommendation. Thoughtful consideration regarding all program decisions are carefully considered by the Board,” said Amy West, President of the Board of Education. “In considering this particular program, some of the merits that the committee highlighted are that it is a no-risk program for the district, as the district has the ability to discontinue it at any time if it becomes a burden in any way. In addition, this is an inclusive program that supports diversity, which is something we value at HFL.”
The committee stated that the program has the potential to enhance diversity opportunities for HF-L students, and stabilize enrollment. The committee noted the risk in joining the program is minimal as the committee recommended a slow, measured implementation plan with a focus on students entering in Grades 2 to 6. The District has complete discretion about which students it takes and how many offers of enrollment it makes. It would only make offers of enrollment where open spaces are available in existing classes. Should the District find the program is not a good fit or there is a financial burden on our taxpayers, the district can exit the program entirely. The Board of Education will vote on the recommendation at the regular business meeting on December 19, 2017.
“HF-L’s vision is to be the school district of choice that students, parents, and staff all want to be part of,” said Superintendent Gene Mancuso. “The Board has discussed the Urban-Suburban program for more than a decade. Their decision will reflect the District’s commitment to enhancing the educational experience of our students, setting high expectations, and optimizing district financial resources.”
