The Honeoye Falls-Lima Middle School celebrated Veteran’s Day with a Take A Veteran to School Day on November 9.
The approximately 200 sixth, seventh and eighth-graders at the school heard stories and insights from three local veterans at the Take A Veteran to School Day. They were joined by New York State Senator Rich Funke (R, C, I-Fairport, State Senate 55th District).
Spectrum and the History Channel partnered in hosting the event.
“As we go about each day, it is too easy to take for granted the freedoms we enjoy as Americans. Our way of life must be valued, nurtured and, when necessary, defended. My father is a Vietnam veteran. I am proud of his service and I am grateful for all those brave individuals who continue to step forward to preserve our freedoms,” said Shawn Williams, principal at HFL Middle School. “My hope is that our students saw our veterans as everyday people. People who care so much about our way of life that they were willing to take the ultimate risk to protect it. Caring to serve others in this way is a true act of courage. They deserve our appreciation and respect.”
Take a Veteran to School Day connects veterans from all walks of life with students in schools and communities nationwide. In 2017, thousands of schools in all 50 states participated. As part of this campaign, HISTORY offered participating schools curriculum-based educational materials at www.veterans.com as well as short videos and additional resources, all provided free-of-charge.
