Ryan Maloney, the son of Honeoye Falls-Lima High School math teacher John Maloney, is making steady progress following an accident while spending the July 4 weekend in New Jersey with friends.
According to recent posts by his parents on the Caring Bridge website, he was moved from the Intensive Care Unit this past Saturday and was scheduled to be moved to a rehabilitation facility this past Monday (July 15).
Maloney suffered a bilateral C6-7 facet dislocation of his cervical spine with an incomplete spinal cord injury on July 5. He underwent emergency surgery on July 5 to relieve pressure on his spinal cord. Maloney, a star lacrosse player at Victor High School, has had no movement in his legs but does have sensation below his waist and has had a bar installed over his hospital bed to do pullups.
He is a rising senior at Cornell University with an over 3.5 grade point average and plays for the Cornell University men’s lacrosse team. His brother, also named John, is an assistant men’s lacrosse coach at the University at Albany.
His Cornell teammates started a GoFundMe page in his honor and as of Monday (July 15) at about noon time, the page had received $194,177 towards the goal of $250,000 to help with his significant medical expenses as he starts the road to recovery.
