National Read Across America week was celebrated March 2-6 and March is National Reading Month. At Honeoye Falls-Lima’s Lima Primary School, the students celebrated the joy of reading and learned that reading can take them everywhere.

Lima Primary had several reading activities during Read Across America week, according to Lima Primary School Principal Allison Cimmerer.

“Each day during the week, there was a different theme,” Cimmerer said. “Monday was Set Sail for Books with the kids and staff able to dress up like pirates. Tuesday was Howdy Readers with students and staff wearing western gear. Wednesday was A Deep Dive into Books. Thursday was Books of the World and Friday was Pajama Day and Cozy up with a good book. Our overall theme was Reading Takes You Everywhere.”

Another activity was a Read Across America Family Night on March 6 at the school. The school also had guest readers come in from District Office and other administrators from the school district during the week.
“The students are encouraged to read quite a lot during that week,” Cimmerer said. “Collectively, the students and staff read 17.926 books.”

The emphasis on reading is continuing throughout the month and will extend into April with the school’s March Book Madness. Much like the NCAA’s men’s and women’s basketball March Madness tournaments, Lima Primary has brackets with books as opponents. The students will vote on which book moves on in the bracket and the champion book will be crowned on April 11th.
