Just add water, it seems, and the annual Youth Trophy Cup Runs becomes even more delicious to all those, ages five to twelve, who run it. Some rain Sunday afternoon, through the heart of the event, added another element to the racing challenge. Rather than dampen the excitement of the competitors, however, it seemed to further invigorate everyone. It was pure fun. The resulting rewards – trophies and medals along with apples, pizza and cake — were especially deserved and extra cherished.

The day marked the 25th anniversary of the Youth Trophy Cup Runs. It is an HF-L Community Programs, Fall Weekend event. The eight races – all run over a period of a couple of hours – are exclusively for children that live in the Honeoye Falls-Lima school district.

Among the highlights Sunday were repeat winners from last year, Elizabeth Geary, Greta Goodberlet and Liam Dailor. Elizabeth was victorious in the race for 8 year olds, Greta won the run for 9 and 10 year old girls and Liam won the boys 11 and 12 year old run. The nail-biter on the day was the run for 9 and 10 year old boys. Owen Darcy and CJ Gray dueled right through the finish shoot with Owen getting the edge by one second in a time of 5:55. Last year, the two were nearly as tight with Owen having a six second margin. CJ is closing in.

Thanks to HF-L High School cross-country coach, Nolan Hoh, there were legions of runners from his teams that volunteered to help conduct the races, including set-up and take-down. And, as last year, Nolan worked the finish timing the full day along with help from his runners.

Longtime sponsors for the Youth Trophy Cup Runs are Honeoye Falls MarketPlace, Molye Chevrolet, M&T Bank and Salvatore’s Old Fashioned Pizzeria. Net proceeds are contributed to assist the Manor and Lima Primary School’s physical education programs.
