Honeoye Falls-Lima Central School District will induct six new members into its Alumni Hall of Fame during Fall Weekend activities this weekend. Following are brief biographies of the inductees.
MICHAEL TERPSTRA
Honeoye Falls-Lima
Class of 1989
Mike Terpstra is a Honeoye Falls-Lima class of 1989 graduate. From his early years, Mike exhibited a blend of academic excellence, athleticism, and artistic talent that set him apart from his peers. He had a passion for music, Star Wars, volleyball, family and friends. Mike’s journey began in Honeoye Falls, where he spent his formative years. During his time at HF-L he excelled academically, was an active member of the National Honor Society, and a Regents Scholarship Award winner. He showed his leadership skills as the President of the High School band. Mike played in our community band and at different Memorial Day ceremonies, demonstrating his dedication to both his studies and his extracurricular activities. Mike also found ways to excel at the sport of volleyball even though HF-L did not have a boys’ volleyball team. He was the only player from the greater Rochester area to make the Empire State Games’ West team in 1988. After graduating high school, Mike pursued higher education at The Ohio State University, graduating in 1994. He walked-on to the Men’s Volleyball team, showcasing his athletic prowess and determination and continued to play all 4 years. He was ranked 2nd in the nation for digs, his team played in the NCAA Final Four Championship, Mike was an All-Tournament team member in 1992, an OSU Scholar Athlete, and he had the opportunity to compete in the 1990 U.S. Olympic Festival. His time at Ohio State was marked by perseverance and a commitment to balancing academics with athletics. He continued his academic journey at UC Berkeley Extension for 6 semesters pursuing Fine Arts. Mike’s professional journey took him to the creative world of visual arts, where he has created imagery for for web applications, game consoles, commercials, and feature films. His talent and hard work led him to work for some of the biggest names in the industry, for George Lucas at Skywalker Ranch (Lucasfilm), LucasArts, Laika, and Disney. His contributions to these companies have left a lasting impact on the visual storytelling that captivates audiences worldwide. You can see his work in films like Star Wars: Episode Ill- Revenge of the Sith, Iron Man, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, The Avengers, Thor, Disney’s A Christmas Carol and many more. Beyond his professional achievements, Mike is a dedicated family man. He is a loving father to his two children, Hana and Max, who are the light of his life. His devotion to his family is evident in everything he does, and he has worked tirelessly to provide them with a loving and nurturing environment. Mike’s love and dedication extend to his late wife, Helen Terpstra, with whom he shared many beautiful years. His strength and resilience in the face of personal loss have been an inspiration to those around him. Mike’s compassion and ability to listen make him a confidant to many. He is insightful and strong, offering support and guidance to those who seek his counsel. Mike’s commitment to his family and his community, coupled with his professional achievements make him a true role model and an exemplary addition to the HF-L Alumni Hall of Fame.
DANIEL EDWARD KULP

Daniel Edward Kulp, born in 1970 in Honeoye Falls, New York, is a multifaceted individual whose life journey has been characterized by creativity, compassion, and significant community contributions. From his early years, it was evident that Dan possessed a unique blend of creativity, humor, and empathy. Growing up in a large and lively family, Dan’s upbringing was enriched by the presence of four siblings with Down syndrome, fostering in him a profound sense of compassion and advocacy. His involvement in Boy Scouts, little league baseball, and high school musicals showcased his diverse interests and talents, laying the foundation for his future endeavors. Dan’s passion for music, ministry, and entertainment led him to explore various avenues of expression. He hosted radio shows targeting teenagers and faith-based audiences, served as a youth director for local churches, and embarked on tours with the Christian rock band “The Dig Project.” Through these experiences and many others, Dan used his talents to inspire and uplift others, leaving a lasting impact on communities across the country. In 2004, Dan married Elizabeth, embarking on a journey of parenthood that would further shape his life’s purpose. Together, they adopted three children with special needs from China and Ukraine, in addition to raising two biological children. Their family of seven, with its unique blend of backgrounds and abilities, epitomizes their unwavering commitment to love, acceptance, and inclusivity. Dan’s creative pursuits extend beyond music and ministry. He is a published author, with his book “Confounding the Wise” offering a poignant exploration of special needs, adoption, and faith. Additionally, Dan has ventured into the world of clean stand-up comedy, captivating audiences with his humor and authenticity. Throughout his career, Dan has remained dedicated to using his platform for meaningful causes. He is a tireless advocate for adoption, special needs support, and youth outreach, using his comedic talents to bring awareness and understanding to these important issues. Whether performing on national television or working a myriad of additional jobs to support his family, Dan’s commitment to service and compassion shines through in all that he does. STEPHANIE STEFANOU TEMPLETON

Class of 1984
Stephanie Stefanou Templeton, a 1984 graduate of Honeoye Falls-Lima High School, embodies dedication, commitment, loyalty, consideration for others, and enthusiasm across all facets of her life. During her time at HF-L, Stephanie served as yearbook editor, participated in student government, and was inducted into the National Honor Society. She captained the soccer team, competed in track, and was a member of the ski club. Following graduation, Stephanie attended Colgate University, earning degrees in Economics and English with a minor in Psychology in 1988. At Colgate, she was actively involved in various organizations including Big Brother/Big Sister, Women at Colgate, Campus Tour Guides, and yearbook. She studied abroad in London and was an honors and dean’s award recipient. Stephanie’s business career unfolded at Paychex, Inc., where she dedicated over two decades to distinguished service. Initially hired by Walter Turek- Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing, she managed sales administration before transitioning to outside sales, National Accounts and advancing to roles such as Senior Manager of Channel and Field Marketing. Her achievements included being recognized as Paychex’s No. 1 Sales Manager for four consecutive years. Turek describes her as a role model for self-driven, high achievement individuals. Colleague Heather Fairbanks lauds Stephanie’s dedication to the people working with and for her. “Stephanie led with passion and conviction. She poured her heart into her team which made us all want to move mountains to attain the outcomes the business expected.” Stephanie was honored by the Rochester Business Journal in its Forty Under 40 program, celebrating individuals who have excelled in their careers while giving back in a meaningful way to the Rochester community. Stephanie has contributed significantly to both her alma maters and her community. She has served on the HF-L School Board since 2010, recognized with the New York State School Board Association Lifetime Achievement Award for her leadership, training, and dedication. Superintendent Gene Mancuso describes her as having a passion for education evidenced by her tireless efforts to enhance the learning experience for students. She has been actively involved in various committees and initiatives, including Art and Sports Boosters, Instructional Leadership Council, Alumni Hall of Fame and Monroe County Labor Relations Committees. At Colgate, Stephanie remains one of the university’s most engaged alumni, volunteering for admissions and alumni activities, fundraising, and serving on the Rochester Alumni club board. Stephanie has also donated her time and talents to support Camp Good Days and Special Times. Married to Adam and a proud mother of Olivia and Jonathan, Stephanie is a lifelong member of the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation. She has been a dear and loyal friend and mentor to former colleagues, schoolmates, and many more. Stephanie Templeton is a revered leader in life, in education, in business, and in her community, exemplifying outstanding leadership and dedication throughout her life.
JOHN BROOMFIELD
Honeoye Falls
Class of 1963
John Broomfield’s life is a testament to dedication, service, and unwavering character. From his military service and professional career to his athletic achievements and community involvement, John has consistently demonstrated excellence and commitment. John is a 1963 graduate of Honeoye Falls Central School, where he excelled as Student Council President, a lead in the school play, and a multi-sport athlete, lettering in soccer, basketball, and baseball. He went on to attend St. Bonaventure University, earning a BBA in Finance in 1967 and commissioning as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army. Notably, his senior year soccer team achieved the school’s first winning season, and John was nominated for Soccer All-American Honors. Following graduation, John served in the U.S. Army Reserves in Germany and at the U.S. Army Field Artillery School in Oklahoma. He commanded a Service Battery at just 23 years old and later served with the NY 401st Civil Affairs Reserves for 4.5 years. After his military service, John enjoyed a successful career with Bausch & Lomb’s Ray-Ban division. In retirement, he found joy in volunteering and working at the Buffalo Bills camp at St. John Fisher University, often sharing the experience with loved ones. John’s commitment to the Honeoye Falls community is unparalleled. He served as the Town of Mendon Parks and Recreation Commissioner for fifteen years and volunteered with numerous organizations, including Vince Lombardi Youth Football, the HF-L Chow Hut, The Lions Club, the Rochester Broadway Theatre League, and the Rochester Transportation Council. His over twenty years of service as an Election Inspector earned him the prestigious Cougar Pride Award from the HF-L Board of Education. John’s faith and family are central to his life. He married Claire Keating (HF Class of 1965), and together they raised two children, Randy and Melynda. They are proud grandparents to Moira, Maggie, Molly, Michael, and Lucy. Known affectionately as “Grandpa B,” John is a familiar presence at community events, high school musicals, parades, and sporting events, always supporting his family, friends, and the “Monroe Street Gang”.The overwhelming theme in the many letters of support for John is his good-natured attitude, his willingness to listen and help, his calm and uplifting demeanor, and his role as a respected community figure. John Broomfield exemplifies the spirit of Honeoye Falls, embodying the values and pride of our community. He truly bleeds black and gold and is a shining example of the power of the paw.

ROBERT WILLIAM LOSS, SR.

Robert William Loss was born to William and Minnie Loss on Cheese Factory Road in the Town of Mendon on July 24, 1913. When he was five, Bob and his parents moved to 208 Boughton Hill Road. Bob lived in that house for the rest of his life and farmed the land there until his retirement in 1986. Bob graduated from Honeoye Falls High School in 1931. Right away, he began farming. Sadly, his father passed away in 1937. Bob took over the family farm, cared for his mother, and supported the war effort through agriculture. In 1950, he married M. Dolores Golden and together they would raise two children, Virginia and Robert Loss, Jr., as he labored over his business. From 1933-1954, Bob played the game of baseball for the Husky Farmers, a semi-pro baseball team. He developed the nickname “Old Reliable” because of his longevity and consistent play. On May 30, 1992, a baseball field at Semmel Road Park in Mendon was dedicated in his memory. Bob served on the Zoning Board for the Town of Mendon for 24 years. During his tenure, he served as the chairperson for much of this time. Bob led with a calming influence, was precise and knowledgeable about the rules and land being discussed. He took nothing for granted and would fully consider each situation with an open mind. Virginia Knapp, Bob’s daughter, writes of her father, “He loved his town and its people. He drove into town most days in his pickup truck to check in with the Town Office and the Mill, to keep abreast of whatever was an issue or on the agenda. He wanted to ensure that Mendon didn’t become a bedroom community like some other towns. He was deeply opposed to any building on hallowed ground. He stood up for the Totiatkton site on Plains Rd. He worked with the DEC to have his pond expanded and stocked with fish to better serve nature and the rural environment. He planted pine trees and fruit trees on his property at the time. The pines now serve as weather projection off Amann Road.” In 1980, Bob was elected to the Mendon Town Board as councilman. He served in this capacity until his death in 1989, acting as deputy supervisor from 1984-1989. Because of his efforts, the town purchased the upper mill and converted and remodeled it into the current Mendon Town Hall. Jack Leckie, the Supervisor for the Town of Mendon during Bob’s time in office, stated, “Bob was true to his nickname of Old Reliable during his lifetime. He was able to take complicated subjects and simplify them. Bob brought with him knowledge of the town and always used good common sense.” Johanna Hally O’Brien knew Bob from her childhood until his passing in 1989. She writes, “He took his service to the Town of Mendon very seriously. He knew every inch of the Town and Mendon, and walked literally hundreds of miles over the many years he served checking every nook and cranny of the township to be sure he understood what residents were asking for if they had to appear before the Zoning Board of Appeals, or, if proposing a new street development, etc. He knew the history of land parcels within the township, he knew the topographical issues within the area, and he always offered advice and counsel in a very thoughtful manner. He listened long and well before he spoke, and his advice reflected that.” Muffy Meisenzahl, who also knew Mr. Loss from her childhood, states, “Bob Loss was deeply rooted in our community. His values were established early on by his family and his academic education. These values were evident as he generously shared his time and talent to mentor, protect farming practices and initiatives, support our agricultural economy, and in the way he lived his life in service to others. This legacy, his legacy, continues to enrich our landscape and shape our community’s desire to retain agrarian practices as part of our environmental policy. Bob’s Husky Farmer moniker, “Old Reliable” reaches well beyond the baseball diamond.”
MARIAN CLARKE POWELL
Honeoye Falls
Class of 1925
Marian Clarke Powell, Honeoye Falls Class of 1925, left an indelible mark through her tireless dedication to education, local history, and community service. Born and raised in Honeoye Falls, she became a beloved figure, touching countless lives. A multifaceted student at Honeoye Falls High School, Marian consistently made the Honor Roll, served as the senior class secretary, and was her class salutatorian. Her artistic talents shone through her participation in the senior class play. Additionally, Marian’s musical abilities impressed audiences during a piano recital where she performed “Minuet” by Seeboeck. Despite contracting tonsillitis, her dedication remained unwavering. Notably, Marian’s creativity extended to writing, as evidenced by her published play, “An Immigrant’s Christmas,” featured in the Honeoye Falls Times on December 22, 1921. Her legacy embodies academic achievement, artistic flair, and resilience. Marian went on to study at the University of Rochester and Middlebury College where she earned a teaching degree. Marian’s impact as an English teacher resonated across generations. From one-room country schools to the sprawling Webster Central School District, Marian’s influence was felt. Colleagues and students alike cherished her friendship. She taught English in various schools, including Fairport, Friendship, Cattaraugus, Williamson, and Webster. The Webster class of 1947 dedicated their yearbook to her, recognizing her guidance and cooperation. After 24 years of teaching, she retired from Webster schools in 1967. Retirement didn’t slow Marian down; instead, it allowed her to immerse herself further in community activities. She served as superintendent of the Methodist Sunday School, actively participated in the Fortnightly Club, and contributed to the Rochester Friday Study Club. In 1970, Marian was appointed Mendon Town Historian by former Town Supervisor Earl Broomfield. Her passion for preserving the past led her to extensive research on the town’s older homes, resulting in numerous articles for the “Honeoye Falls Times.” Alongside Helen Cooney, Honeoye Falls Village Historian, she co-authored a comprehensive history of Mendon and Honeoye Falls for the Bicentennial in 1976. Marian’s commitment to local history extended beyond her official role. She embodied the spirit of volunteerism, supporting civic and religious endeavors. Her writings provided a foundation for those curious about the area’s past. Marian Powell passed away in 1979 leaving behind a legacy of community service, education, and historical preservation. Her contributions continue to inspire, reminding us of the importance of understanding our roots and nurturing future generations. As we induct her into the Honeoye Falls-Lima Alumni Hall of Fame, we honor her memory and celebrate her remarkable life.
