What do magic shows, Tornado T’s, yoga, crafts, songs, croquet, solar-scale presentations, puppet theater, baby sign language, chocolate, story theater, Apollo Space Missions talk, seed sharing, music of Africa, bee keeping, herb drying, LEGOs, and Wildlife Rockstars all have in common? They’re all events being offered this summer at the Mendon Public Library. The 2019 Summer Reading Program, “A Universe of Stories,” kicks off on Wednesday, June 26 at 5:30 pm with crafts and “Rich the Magic Man!”

Throughout the day on June 26, 2019 and until August 14, 2019, patrons are encouraged to stop by the library to pick up Summer Reading Bingo Boards and/or Book Report Entry Forms. Kids, teens, and adults will all have reading incentives to keep them engaged in reading throughout the summer. Research clearly shows the benefit of this—kids maintain the reading level they’ve achieved during the school year, or, in many cases, improve their reading skills over the summer. Teens and adults, likewise, expand their world by reading!

During the first week of the program, kids up to 11-years-old take home a lanyard and a button for completing the Week 1 BINGO Board. Kids can keep adding buttons to their lanyards all summer as they read and explore the world around them. Participate each week to win up to one lanyard and seven buttons in total. Kids can also participate in the Red Wings “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” contest. Teens can enter a drawing for one of four $25 Visa Cards by writing their name and book title that they’ve read on a Summer Reading Teen Book Review Slip and/or by completing a Teen Bingo Board. Adults earn a chance for a $50 HFMP Gift Card by filling out an entry form for each book they read on a Summer Reading Adults Book Review Slip and/or by completing an Adult Bingo Board.

Participation in all the reading incentive programs and most of the activities is free. Some events do require reservations (registration opens June 19), and some events are targeted toward specific audiences. To learn more, stop by the Library to pick up a brochure, look online at mendonlibrary.org/Summer Reading Tab (right sidebar), or, follow the Mendon Public Library on Facebook, Twitter and/or Instagram. Join us for a Universe of Stories!

Mendon Public Library continues to be able to offer the Summer Reading Program thanks to a generous grant from Honeoye Falls Market Place, Mendon Meadows Market Place, M&T Bank, and, support from the Friends of the Mendon Public Library.
