Summer in September continued with temperatures hitting the low 80’s for the Youth Trophy Cup Runs. It was held on the 28th of the month, HF-L Fall Weekend. The heated air was matched by the heated finishes that highlighted the eight age-group races that make up the annual, youth running festival.

The race for age 9 & 10 boys featured two winners from last year going head-to-head, Dominik Lada and Chase Byler. Chase, winner of last year’s race for 8 year-old’s, moved up this year to the age 9 & 10 race. That produced a meet-up with Dominik, who is one year older and the winner of the race last year. In the end, just a 3.1 second margin separated them. Chase’s gritty effort brought him through the finish-line a close second to Dominik’s winning time of five minutes, forty-three seconds.

The run for 5-year old’s saw a final, narrow 3.2 second margin of victory between winner, Esme Kovalik, and Sebastian Lada, second. Esme’s time was a speedy one minute, fifty-one seconds. In the 7-year old’s race, Silas Auyer edged Declan Byler by a mere 3.3 seconds, winning in three minutes, twenty-two seconds. For 9 & 10 girls, Hattie Auyer’s strong last 200 yards netted her a 4.7 second winning margin over Nora Metzger. Hattie covered the course impressively in six minutes, five seconds.

Other race winners were: Hunter Lynch, winning the 6-year old’s run in one minute, forty-three seconds; brother Bodie Lynch, winning the 8-year old’s race in three minutes, thirty-five seconds; Jacob Parkes, topping the 11 & 12 boys run in five minutes twenty-seven seconds; and Charlotte Staples, taking first in the 11 & 12 girl’s category in six minutes, forty-eight seconds.

There were excellent achievements for returning runners who greatly improved their finishing time from last year. In the 6-year old’s run, the one-year difference produced a faster time by 68 seconds for Atticus Tansey. For Everleigh Byington, the improvement was a 36 second reduction and Isaac Staples lowered his time by 27.3 seconds. Additionally, Owen Pritchard dropped 18.8 seconds from last year and, for Emmalyn Parmelee, the reduction was 11 seconds. In the 8-year old’s run, Augustyn Lada was 4 seconds under the prior year and Alexandra Byington was quicker by 3.6 seconds.

Completing its 28th running, the Youth Trophy Cup Runs consists of a one-day competition – eight separate cross-country races – for HF-L school district children, ages five to twelve. There is joy found among schoolmates in friendly competition. For most, it is their first experience in an organized running event. Five and six-year-old participants run a course .264 miles in length, just over a quarter mile. Seven and eight-year-olds run .520 miles, while ages nine and up compete over a distance of .859 miles. Boys and girls run together in the first four races for ages five, six seven and eight. Beginning age nine, boys and girls are in separate age-group races.

HF-L cross country coach, Nolan Hoh, and his many, energized team-members were an enormous help conducting the event, as they have been in past years. The Trophy Cup Runs, an HF-L Community Programs event, is greatly benefited by long-time sponsors Honeoye Falls Marketplace, Jessica Chevrolet and Salvatore’s Pizzeria. Event net proceeds go to the Manor School to help purchase needed equipment for physical education.
