At the September 9th Town Board meeting, the members of the Mendon board proclaimed Sept. 17-23 to be Constitution Week in the Town of Mendon. The aims of Constitution Week are to emphasize citizen’s responsibilities for protecting and defending the Constitution; Inform people that the Constitution is the basis for America’s great heritage and the foundation of our way of life; and to encourage the study of historical events which led to the framing of the Constitution in 1787.
The celebration of the Constitution was started by the Daughters of the American Revolution. In 1955, DAR petitioned Congress to set aside September 17-23 annually to be dedicated for the observance of Constitution Week. The resolution was later adopted by the U.S. Congress and signed into public law on August 2, 1956, by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
Attending this meeting representing the NSDAR Canandaigua Chapter, Inc. was Marty Guenther, 2nd Vice Regent of the Canandaigua Chapter and Mendon resident.
Constitution Week is a great time to learn more about this important document and celebrate the freedoms it gave us. You might even pick up a pocket Constitution at Bleak House Books or stop by the Mendon Library and brush up on your knowledge.
