With hefty academic and athletic accomplishments behind them and, hopefully more to come in their respective sports seasons ahead of them, three Honeoye Falls-Lima student athletes looked ahead to the next chapter in their academic and athletic pursuits as they signed letters of intent to attend college next year.
Seniors Mackenzie Camp, Winnie Hotchkiss and Anthony Noto put pens to paper during a joint signing ceremony last Friday (November 15) in the high school auditorium.
Camp, the daughter of Jennifer Checho and Craig Camp, will attend the University of Indianapolis and play for the women’s lacrosse program. She is thinking of majoring in psychology with a concentration in forensic psychology. She also considered Wagner, Monmouth and Canisius.
“What sold me on Indianapolis was the atmosphere of the team,” Camp said. “It was very positive and fun and the coaching staff impressed me. They have such a passion for the game.”
Camp carries an A/A- average in the classroom. She is also a member of Interact and SADD and is a Link Crew leader. She will be entering her second year on the HF-L girls varsity lacrosse team next spring. A midfielder/attacker, Camp helped the Lady Cougars win the Section V Class C title in 2019 and advance to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class C semifinals. She totaled seven goals with 12 assists and nine ground balls as an attacker. While she is proud of helping to achieve that goal, Camp says there is another thing that she is proud of as a member of the team.
“The friendships that I have made with the other girls on the team are what I am most proud of and that I cherish,” she said.
Hotchkiss, the daughter of Carolyn and Peter Hotchkiss, will attend Niagara University and play for its women’s lacrosse program. She is thinking of a possible major in nursing. Hotchkiss also looked at LeMoyne, St. Lawrence and Nazareth.
“I wasn’t really sure whether I wanted to play at the D1 or D2 level,” she stated. “I chose Niagara because of the whole environment of the team and the coaching staff. In addition, it is a D1 school and I decided I wanted to play at the highest level of lacrosse that I could.”
Hotchkiss has an 89 average in the classroom and is also a member of the Varsity Alpine Ski team, where she also piled up impressive achievements. She is also a member of the Big Brother/Big Sister program at HF-L. Hotchkiss will enter her third year on the HF-L girls varsity lacrosse team this spring. She had 16 ground balls and 16 takes as a defender last spring. She started lacrosse in first grade.
“My older brother was playing lacrosse and I thought it was a cool sport,” Hotchkiss said. “I wanted to do everything he did. I joined the youth club program, but because there was no first/second grade team at the time, I joined the third-grade program and had a great time.”
Noto, the son of Susan and Anthony Noto, will attend North Carolina State University and wrestle for the Wolfpack. The three-time state champion will be shooting for his fourth sectional title and fourth state title this winter. He is thinking of majoring in either criminal justice or sports management. In addition to North Carolina State, he was either recruited by or considered Ohio State, Binghamton, Stanford and Bucknell.
“NC State has a great facility and the coaches are wonderful,” Noto said. “Plus, the weather is great. I’ve always wanted to go there and have followed their team since I started wrestling.”
Noto carries a 3.8 grade point average and works at the sport year-round. He started wrestling in the sixth grade in the community’s youth program. He has been a member of the varsity for four years. Last year, he was named the All-Greater Rochester Division 2 (small schools) Wrestler of the Year and was named an All-American.
“My dad got me interested in the sport as he wrestled when he was in school,” he said. “I have wrestled a lot outside of school, winning regional tournaments before going to the national tournament in Fargo, North Dakota where I finished fifth.”
