BY DEB AND TIM SMITH
Last October we attended our first Lima Pumpkin Festival and Agriculture Day. It was a blast and this year we’re here to fill you in on the precursor to that fall classic. As opposed to that scene in Cinderella, those fall pumpkins don’t just appear out of nowhere; somebody has to plant them in the spring and the crew at the Lima Pumpkin Festival is here to help you.
That assist will be provided at the annual Free Pumpkin & Sunflower Seed Pick-up. This giveaway will take place on Saturday, May 2, on the second floor of the Lima Town Hall on East Main Street at 1:00 pm. Your trip to the Town Hall will garner you one free packet of seeds and if you’re interested in additional packets they will be available for sale.
Foreshadowing the fun of the fall, please allow us to review the potential pumpkin prizes this summer’s growers will aspire to acquire. A total of $2,250 will be awarded to the growers of the largest pumpkins in the three following categories…
* White Polar Bear Pumpkins
* Atlantic Giant Pumpkin
* Jack Carving Pumpkin
The fall event also offers prizes for the tallest sunflower and the sunflower with the largest head. We’ll be back with more complete details on the fall piece in September. Until then, we’re wishing you the greenest of thumbs.
