The “Color Our World” Summer Reading Program brought our community out together for a variety of adventures. We shared reading, learning and creating, plus, we had lots of fun! Record crowds, nearly 2,350 strong, turned out for our various events. Of the 323 children who picked up our art journal, they recorded reading over 11,305 books!
Raffle prizes were awarded to kids, teens and adults. Teens submitted book reviews, and we had four winners for the $25 Visa Gift Card (Callie Adams, Bea Corey, Paislee Libertore, and Charlotte Staples). Adrien Abraham, Violet Catalano, Samantha Lloyd, and Emily Repass helped out at programs. CougarTech FIRST Robotics provided some terrific LEGO Volunteers. Our new Teen Services Librarian, Emily English, offered awesome programming on Tuesday and Thursdays. Participation and involvement was impressive. VolunTeens! included: Adrien Abraham, Callie Adams, Erik Ahn, Bryn Carson, Nox Cooper, Carlisi DiMino, Grayson Etter, Carter Gebhart, Olivia Hammond, Ayla Harrington, Nolan Holt, Sydney Johnson, Sebastian King, Sydney Kwiatkowski, Molly Lamonica, Benjamin McMinn, Jackson McMinn, Mara Nichols, Maddie Peters, Stella Schaefer, Smith Schaefer, Julia Shaw, Charlotte Staples, Anna Sytnik, Lucy Tompsett, Ava Youngblut, Nathaniel and Christian. Six teen crafts were completed during the Summer!
Julia Kwiatcowski won the adult prize for the adult book review drawing, a $50 gift card to HFMP/MMMP. Rory Allison, Jennifer DeVille Catalano, Mary Anne Magee, Cathy Rawlins, Gretchen Schober, and Nancy Yohannes were valued adult volunteers.
Amazingly, we had over 2350 people attend a Summer Reading Program event. It was great fun to meet at the library and around the Village, Town, and County. We were thrilled to have special guest readers including State Senator Pamela Helming, Assemblymember Jennifer Lunsford, Town Supervisor John Moffitt, County Legislator and Village Mayor Rick Milne, Monroe County Sheriff Kelly Valvassori, and Principals Allison Cimmerer and Joelle Weaver.
The Mendon Public Library offers the Summer Reading Program to the community thanks to generous grants and support from The Friends of Mendon Public Library, M&T Bank, Memorial Art Gallery, Mill Art Center, Honeoye Falls Salvatores, 20 Deep Winery, Canandaigua Sailboard, Dipper Dan, Genesee Country Village and Museum, Honeoye Falls Marketplace, Kiwanis, Rochester Americans, Rochester Knighthawks, Rochester Museum and Science Center, Seabreeze, Seneca Park Zoo, Strong Museum of Play, and Yoga Love. Next summer’s program theme is “Unearth a Story – Dinosaurs/Archaeology/Paleontology.”
The Friends of Mendon Public Library continued to support the love of reading by delivering 150 paperback books to Lima Primary School for distribution in their First Day Kindergarten Packs.
