A Feb. 8 Euchre Tournament at Fanatics Pub will support The Friends of Borgne as well as the Lima Crossroads Festival. “We are bringing communities together,” said Caroline Haviland of Friends of Borgne, an organization that supports people in Borgne, Haiti.
Some of the proceeds will allow Friends of Borgne to continue supporting dozens of students each year with tuition, books, uniforms, school supplies and school lunches. For more than a decade, Friends of Borgne has supported school scholarships, a soup kitchen, band instruments and a mobile library in Borgne, a city on the northern coast of Haiti. Friends of Bornge has also built a school building, started or restarted three elementary schools, saved a quality high school from closing, and fixed numerous roofs. The group also subsidizes the pay for teachers at three elementary schools, reducing tuition for more than 400 students. “They don’t have the resources we have but we want them to be able to get an education,” said Haviland.
Friends of Borgne believes that education is the way to drive lasting change in Haiti, promoting economic development, justice, and democracy. The need is great in Haiti right now, as the result of severe unrest and the lingering effects of the pandemic. Hunger there is the highest it has been in decades and the United Nations has reported “catastrophic” levels of hunger for tens of thousands of people.
The tournament will take place Feb, 8 at Fanatics Pub, 7281 W Main St, Lima, NY. Check-in starts at 11. The cost is $25.00 and there will be prizes for first and second place and a 50/50 raffle. Snacks and Lunch are provided and there will be a cash bar.
