Literature examines the inner soul of the characters portrayed. Sometimes those characters represent noting more than roles within the novel itself. At other times, authors create characters as metaphors to offer a greater lesson, often a lesson that the norms of the day prefer not to consider (today we’d call it “political correctness”).
