On Saturday, April 14 at 11 AM, Lima officials and volunteers will meet up with shovels and watering cans at Mark Tubbs Park to plant fifty native tree seedlings along the walking trails in the natural area of the park. The seedlings will be 1’ to 2’ tall and will be obtained through the Livingston County Soil & Conservation District Tree & Shrub Seedling Program.
This event is made possible, in part, with a grant of $1,000 awarded through a competitive process by the New York State Urban Forestry Council. Lima Village Trustee John Correll and Lima Town Councilwoman Cathy Gardner worked together to plan the event, first meeting with a NYS Department of Environmental Conservation forester for guidance on tree selection and planting and subsequently writing the grant application together after learning of the opportunity during the DEC visit.
Celebrated annually since 1872, Arbor Day is a day dedicated to public tree planting and celebrating the role of trees in our lives. Lima’s tree planting will take place two weeks earlier than the official NY Arbor Day in order to get the seedlings in the ground as soon as they arrive. It is a family event and the organizers hope to have children participate in planting trees and watching them grow up to beautify the park in the years ahead.
