The Avon Opera Block glittered with excitement this past Saturday night, February 21st, 2026. The Valley of Rochester Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry held its biennial Symbolic Lodge Awards Program at the historic Opera House in the heart of Avon. This event celebrates the dedication, service, and quiet leadership that strengthen local lodges and enrich the entire Masonic family.

Michael Simmons, 32 MSA, chaired the event and acted as Master of Ceremonies. In his opening remarks, he said, “Since its establishment in 1985, the Symbolic Lodge Award Program has served a meaningful purpose: to give the Masters of our Lodges an opportunity to publicly recognize brothers whose steady labor and long-term commitment often occur behind the scenes. These are brothers who ask for nothing, expect nothing, and yet give everything to ensure their Lodge thrives. Their contributions may not always be visible, but their impact is unmistakable.”

More than 100 people attended the event, which took place on the third floor of the recently renovated, 100+-year-old building that also houses the Town of Avon offices. Of the 18 men honored, three are members of local lodges: Ryan Witherow (Avon Springs #570 in Avon), Troy Shouse (Union Star #320 in Honeoye Falls), and Phillip White (Oatka #759 in Scottsville).

In addition to individual recipients, this year included the District Lodge Awards. Criteria for selection included community engagement, visibility and participation in local events, hosting public activities, member engagement, supporting degree programs within the Lodge and throughout the District, and traveling to other Lodges and events to show genuine support and fellowship.

The Valley of Rochester Scottish Rite spans from Lake Ontario south to the Pennsylvania border. As a concordant body of Freemasonry, any Mason may join a Scottish Rite Valley (there are several in New York State and more in other states). The Scottish Rite builds upon the ethical teachings, philosophy, and history of American Freemasonry, making it most relevant as our country begins to celebrate its 250th anniversary.
