Cibi'sThis coming Thursday, July 14th, the Greater Western New York Film Academy is inviting you to come to The Grange (a.k.a. Cibi’s Deliziosi, 3894 Rush Mendon Rd, Mendon, New York 14506) in the Hamlet of Mendon for an after dinner evening of Mendon Midsummer Madness. The students will be learning how to film in a studio with a live TV audience, and they need people willing to serve as extras.

The “show” will be a series of three 10 minute presentations, and you just might want to come to experience the presentations themselves! The first presentation will be offered by a nationally acclaimed journalist and speaker. He’ll share what he’s learned from interviewing hundreds of financial professionals from coast-to-coast. The second presentation will be a food demonstration that will make your mouth water. Not only will you be able to use local ingredients, but in less than ten minutes, the aromatic aromas and the sizzling sights and sounds will become a delicious delicacy you’ll be invited to sample. The final presentation will tackle an alluring topic that’s in the back of everyone’s mind: Should Greater Western New York secede and become its own state. Presented by a local author and Greater Western New York booster, you’ll find out why Vermont became a state and Greater Western New York didn’t, and much, much, more.

Each session is 10 minutes and there will be two 10 minute intermissions where audience members can ask questions to the speakers as the stage is prepared for the next session.

Come help the filmmaking workshop students, mingle with friends, and learn something practical – and stimulating!

Greater Western New York a State? Why Not? – Why did Vermont split off from New York to become an independent state while Greater Western New York didn’t? How might things have looked if it did? Local author Chris Carosa takes the audience from the pre-Revolutionary War Bennington, New York (now Vermont) through the Treaty that defined Greater Western New York and its immediate aftermath. In ten minutes, he’ll answer the questions:

  • Why was the Greater Western New York region in a position to claim its own independence from New York State following the Revolutionary War?
  • What prevented Western New York from duplicating what Vermont did?
  • What might a Western New York State looked like?
  • How does Western New York today compare to other states?
