An energetic, fun group of knitters who meet every other Thursday at the Mendon Public Library, our very own Knit Nook, proclaim, “Our ‘Keep Rochester Warm’ project was a huge success! This is due to YOU, the wonderful people of Mendon and Honeoye Falls. You knit, crocheted, and purchased warm hats, gloves, socks and scarves for others in our community to be warm this winter. The number of items that we received at the library this year far exceeded our expectations! There were enough warm winter items for us to donate to three agencies. The Pittsford Food Cupboard, Meals on Wheels, and the YWCA in the City of Rochester all received your donations.”

Thank you notes from three organizations expressed how grateful they were for these donations. One such thank you letter stated, “I want to tell you about one of our clients. When I gave him a warm pair of socks, he had tears in his eyes. He told me that he had never owned a pair of socks that nice. He put them on while he waited for his food. A warm pair of socks that many of us take for granted meant so much to this man. Similar comments were expressed by other clients when they received gloves or a hat.”

Another thank you letter stated, “Thank you so much for the recent donation of hand knit items. There is something really special about a hand knit item, it really shows our clients that community folks care about them. Most of the families we serve are experiencing some sort of trauma and knowing they are being thought about is a valuable gift.”

It is because of these positive responses from the agencies that the Knit Nook has decided to continue the “Keep Rochester Warm” project. The Knit Nook will provide free patterns to all who would like them and collect finished items throughout the year at the Mendon Public Library for winter distribution.

Bev Shaffer, facilitator of the Knit Nook at the Mendon Public Library, said, “Thank you, Thank you for all the caring people who helped with our project. For the work that everyone put into knitting, crocheting and purchasing warm winter things for our community. We have truly made ‘Rochester Warm’ this year.”

Join the Knit Nook at the Mendon Public Library on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the Month, 10 am – 11:30 am. Additionally, look for their display and available patterns offered throughout the year at the Knit Nook table in the library’s reading room.
