New York State Department of Environmental Conservation mandates that the Village of Lima waste water treatment plant be upgraded to disinfect the effluent water that empties back into Spring Creek as well as reduce the particles of phosphor.

These two new requirements will cost approximately three to four million dollars to upgrade the mechanics of the plant. These requirements must be met by May 1, 2023.

The Village has applied for and won a grant to receive a zero percent interest loan for this project as well as the possibility for some additional grant money. However, this will not be enough to pay for the upgrades and the Village will need to initiate a series of sewer rate increases starting this fall. A public hearing will be held in late summer to receive public input. The sewer rates in Lima have not gone up since July 1, 2013.
