Frank Sinatra’s Come Fly With Me just might be the right song for Wheatland-Chili Class of 2024 graduate Ethan Hallock.
Hallock, the son of Kerry and Scott Hallock of Scottsville, is attending Bowling Green University in Ohio where he intends to major in aviation/flight technology and operations and is looking at becoming a pilot.
“I did some research about being a pilot, what it takes to be one and it sounds challenging but rewarding,” said Hallock during a phone interview from Bowling Green this past Sunday. “I could be a commercial plane pilot (like American or United or Delta) or a cargo plane pilot (like UPS, FedEx); I’m not sure exactly which way to go right now.”
Hallock also looked at Western Michigan, Ohio State and Purdue.
“Bowling Green was my top choice,” Hallock said. “Its location is one reason, but I also liked the campus, the sense of community on the campus and the aviation program is very good.”
Carrying a 91 average in the classroom, Hallock took three Advanced Placement courses: U.S. History, English Literature and Composition and Biology.
Hallock was a member of the National Honor Society and took part in Ski Club before turning to hockey in high school. He was a three-sport athlete at Wheatland-Chili. He played on the varsity soccer team for three years. A co-captain as a senior, he was a starter on defense where he played a key role in the team’s four shutouts but he also tallied four goals (third on the team) with two assists. Hallock played for four years on the Spartan Hockey team, a combination of students from Gates Chili, Wheatland-Chili, Rush-Henrietta and Wayne. A captain this past winter, he was a defenseman but he stepped up on offense with six goals and eight assists (fourth on the team in both).
He played for the W-C varsity tennis team for three years and won 12 matches this past spring at first singles. He does not intend to play a varsity sport at Bowling Green, but may play one at the club or intramural level.
Outside of school, Hallock was a delegate to Boys State. He worked at Morgan Crossing Golf course and Scottsville Ice Arena and at Mr. Beach’s Farm Market on Scottsville Road. He also played travel soccer, travel hockey and travel baseball.
Hallock won several awards this year. He received a President’s Award for Educational Excellence, a Scholars of Distinction Award, the Sons of the American Revolution Alexander Millener Award and a U.S. Air Force Varsity Excellence Award. Hallock was named the Wheatland-Chili Male Athlete of the Year, earning Most Valuable Player Awards in both soccer and tennis. He received the Best Teammate Award and the Tyler Putnam Award, both for hockey. In soccer, he earned Exceptional Senior and All-League 1st team honors. For hockey, he was named to the Section V Senior All Star game and to the All-League 1st team. He collected All-League 1st team honors in tennis this past spring.
Two W-C teachers who made an impact on him are Chris Peets and Brian Glass.
“Mr. Peets was my Economics and Participation in Government teacher as well as being the tennis team coach and Mr. Glass was my Sociology and history teacher,” Hallock said. “They have offered advice and would always ask how things were going; they were very supportive.”
His favorite memories revolve around his friends and sports.
“Homecoming and the soccer game was really fun,” he said. “Playing sports with my friends was wonderful. With hockey, it was a cool experience because of the team being composed of players from four different schools. I met a lot of people that I would not have otherwise and, even though we came from four schools, we formed a very cohesive team.”
