On Thursday, August 11th, American Legion Falls Post #664 held their annual picnic at the Post Home (Town of Mendon Falls Post #664 Community Center) in Honeoye Falls. Over 40 Legionnaires, family members and guests shared camaraderie, conversation and some great food. Thanks to all who brought a dish to pass, cooked the hots and hamburgers, set up and cleaned up! A true team effort ensured an enjoyable evening for all.

The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is the nation’s largest wartime veterans service organization, committed to mentoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in our communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security, and continued devotion to our fellow service members and veterans.

Falls Post #664 strives to fulfill the Legion’s Mission by performing a number of activities in our community, including:

Sponsoring qualified, outstanding young men who are HF-L high school juniors to attend Boys State, giving them a solid foundation to be good citizens;

Running the local Memorial Day observances, placing flags on almost 800 veteran’s graves in nine cemeteries, performing ceremonies in five of those cemeteries, and marshaling three parades – North Bloomfield, Mendon and Honeoye Falls, to honor our fallen comrades and to make certain their sacrifice is not forgotten;

Holding a food drive for the local FISH Food Cupboard at Honeoye Falls Market Place, assisting local families in need;
Assisting the Auxiliary in distributing Poppies before Memorial Day at the Mendon Meadows Mall, accepting donations to help local veterans in need;

Participating in patriotic events for the Manor Elementary School around Flag Day, making sure our youngest residents begin to learn to respect the flag and see their community’s veterans;

Performing Veteran’s Day services at the four-corners of Honeoye Falls, honoring those who have served this nation;

Playing an instrumental role in the completion of the Veteran’s Memorial Project at the Honeoye Falls Cemetery, permanently honoring all who have served.

Our meetings are 7:00PM, the second Thursdays of each month, except July when there is no meeting. August is the annual picnic and December is a Christmas party. We meet at the Town of Mendon Falls Post #664 Community Center, 167 North Main Street in Honeoye Falls. If your service meets the Legion’s eligibility dates (http://www.legion.org/membership/faq) please consider joining us!
