The members of Friends of Borgne (https://friendsofborgnehaiti.org/), a 501(c)3, had a visit from Johnny, Estimable Francius Dauphin, from our Sister-City in Borgne, Haiti, as they prepare for a local Mardi Gras celebration, Covid-style, Carnival of Soups fundraiser on February 27, 2022. It will be a curbside, pickup/drive thru event.
Johnny gave an update on the programs Friends of Borgne supports and the political situation in the northern part of Haiti where Borgne is located. Since Borgne has had a low rate of Covid, the children are back in school. Two of the students Friends of Borgne has supported will take final exams this year. Political crime is lower in the Borgne region. Gas prices have come down somewhat though gangs in the south still disrupt the movement of gas throughout the country. He will return to Haiti soon after visiting family in Florida.
The Friends of Borgne fundraiser, Carnival of Soups will help to keep the programs going. Pastor Kirk Baker will provide his chili recipe as one of the options at the Carnival of Soups on February 27, 2022. to support education programs in Borgne. The soup options are Haitian Soup journou, Chicken Leek, Chicken Sweet Potato Peanut (West African), Garden Salad with Sour Cream, Chili, Squash, Broccoli Cheese, Jambalaya, Lentil (vegan), Vegetable (vegetarian), Lentil Spinach ((Vegan, Gluten and Dairy free) or Pasta e Fagioli with Sausage. The soups will be a 32 ounce soup of your choice and a small homemade loaf of bread for a donation of $12 (cash or check please).
Friends of Borgne will be at the Mendon Community Center, 167 N. Main Street February 27 from 10 AM – 2 PM, or until the soup is gone. People can drive into the parking lot where a greeter will take their 32 oz soup order which includes a small loaf of bread and their $12. A volunteer will then fetch the soup and deliver it back to the car. Distance, masks and respect to not come if you are sick will be appreciated.
