The September 6 2018 meeting of the Honeoye Falls/Mendon Historical Society will feature Jane Oakes. The title of her presentation is “Mr. Graham’s Crackers”…
Oakes earned an MA in History and a BA in Theater. She has served on the Boards of the Livingston County and Town of York Historical Societies and has been teaching people history for over forty years. She has spoken to the Society several times in the past on topics including local opera houses (a love of hers) and the discovery of an early brewery in York. She is an entertaining and informative speaker.
The Reverend Sylvester Graham devised a way of eating that shocked people in the mid-19th century. Some thought him a genius, while other felt he was simply…well ‘crackers’. What was this new diet? How did America react to it? In what ways are we still following the Graham method today?
The meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 6th at the Mendon Community Center, 167 North Main Street, Honeoye Falls. This facility is handicapped accessible. The meeting is open to the public. For information, call 624-5655.
