Moffitt has served as Mendon Town Supervisor for 15 years and is the second-longest serving Supervisor in the Town’s history

After more than 15 years of dedicated service to the Mendon community, Town Supervisor John Moffitt has announced that he will not seek re-election in 2025. This decision marks the beginning of a new chapter in his life as he plans to retire from the position.

“This decision was not made lightly,” Supervisor Moffitt said. “Serving as Town Supervisor has been one of the greatest honors of my life. Together, we have achieved so much for our community—stabilizing taxes, improving quality of life, and preserving the unique character of Mendon. I’m confident that the next generation of leadership will continue this legacy and guide Mendon into the future.”

Moffitt was first elected as Town Supervisor in 2009 during a pivotal time for the Town. Facing significant challenges, including financial instability and rising property taxes, he answered the call to serve, following in his grandfather’s footsteps, who held the same position from 1940 to 1962. Under his leadership, the Town has seen its property tax rate stabilize while also benefiting from significant community improvements, including the development of a splash park, numerous sidewalk expansions, construction of the new library, and the development of a new youth center.

“Under the previous administration, the tax rate in the Town of Mendon increased 22% from 2008-2009, and financial reserves were being spent rapidly. Since I took over as Mendon Town Supervisor, we have rebuilt the Town’s finances while protecting taxpayers. We’ve kept the tax rate stable, even cutting the tax rate in 2018 and 2021. Today, Mendon’s tax rate ranks among the lowest in Monroe County and the lowest among towns without a landfill or massive commercial development. We did all this while reinstituting a second brush pick-up, opening the Mendon Youth Center, constructing the library, expanding our sidewalks, and building a new splash park,” continued Moffitt.

Moffitt provided town residents with an open letter explaining his decision, which will be in next week’s Sentinel.
