Jake (Jeffrey) Moon, grandson of former HF-L coach Tom Moon and nephew of current Lima resident Diane Moon Fields, was killed in a work-related accident last week outside of Los Angeles, California. According to a report from CBS Los Angeles affiliate KCAL-TV, Moon died while trying to restore power during a storm at approximately 5:20 p.m. local time on January 6, 2016. He apparently slipped while climbing to a power pole and was electrocuted when he fell on live wires. As of the January 7 KCAL report, the investigation remains under investigation.

Fields told The Sentinel Tom Moon coached at HF-L from 1969 until 1995 and was the Lima coach for all sports from 1960 until the merger in 1969. Jake was one of twelve grandchildren of Tom and Kathy Moon. His aunt further adds that Jake’s father John left the area in the late 1970s to attend college in Greensboro, North Carolina, where he settled after finishing school. John Moon later moved his family to Spotsylvania, Virginia, where Jake attended school, playing football and wrestling. “Jake moved to LA a couple of years ago to be closer to his wife’s family,” said Fields.

Moon was 26 years old.
