STORY UPDATE (6/7): The NYSPHSAA Class C State Semifinal lacrosse between Honeoye Falls-Lima and Jamesville-Dewitt originally scheduled for Wednesday, June 7 was delayed until Friday, June 9 as a result of the air quality issues caused by the Canadian wildfires.
The Honeoye Falls-Lima Boys Varsity Lacrosse team headed to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class C Tournament semifinals, riding a five game win streak.
HF-L, the top seed in the Section V Class C Tournament, took a two-game win streak into the tournament and kept it going with an 8-6 victory over #4 seed Geneva in the semifinals on May 26. The Cougars took a 3-2 lead at the end of the first quarter after trailing 1-0 early to Geneva. Chase Perryman, Braydn Trybuskiewicz and Grady Goodberlet had the goals for the Cougars. HF-L opened up a bit more of a gap with three more goals in the second quarter to hold a 6-4 lead at halftime. Trybuskiewicz, Goodberlet and Drew Angelo tallied the goals for the Cougars. Goodberlet and Perryman struck again in the third quarter for an 8-5 lead. Geneva rallied with a goal in the fourth, but HF-L denied it any momentum. Goodberlet had three goals, Trybuskiewicz two goals and three assists, Perryman two goals and one assist, Angelo one goal and Mathew Brassie one assist. Trevor Reese made three saves in goal. Angelo won 13 faceoffs to go with seven ground balls. Patrick Donahoe had four ground balls and one take, Owen Smith four ground balls and one take, Donnell Hall three ground balls and four takes, Perryman three ground balls, Marco Vengoechea two ground balls, Trybuskiewicz one ground ball, Alex Steinhoff one take, Reese one ground ball, Ben Cook one ground ball and one take and Brassie one ground ball.
“We had a slow start with our shots not going in early in the first quarter,” coach Eric Goodberlet said. “In the second half, that changed and once we got that four goal lead, we also had some long possessions. Our defense really shined. Trevor did a nice job in goal. Ben Cook has been our anchor on defense and shadowed their top attacker. Donnell has done a great job on defense, moving there this year from midfield.”
The Cougars needed double overtime to do it, but they edged #3 Wayne 9-8 in the Class C title on May 30. The squads were tied after the first quarter as Perryman and Smith had the Cougar goals. Brassie had the only goal for the club in the second period as HF-L found itself trailing at halftime by 5-3. HF-L fought back in the third quarter with three straight goals, two by Perryman (the tournament’s Most Valuable Player) and one by Donahoe.
Goodberlet (an All-Tournament team member) also added a pair of goals in the quarter and HF-L led 8-6 going into the fourth quarter. Wayne scored twice in the final quarter to force overtime. Neither team scored in the first OT session as Wayne won the faceoff but had a shot hit off the pipe and rebound to midfield. HF-L could not capitalize on its opportunity either. The Cougars won the faceoff in the second OT, took the ball downfield and worked it around until Perryman netted the game-winner off an assist from Brassie with 2:59 remaining. Trybuskiewicz, Hall and Reese were also named to the All-Tournament team. Perryman finished with four goals and two assists,
Goodberlet two goals and one assist, Brassie one goal and one assist, Smith one goal, Donahoe one goal and Trybuskiewicz two assists. Reese handled seven saves in goal. Angelo picked up 11 ground balls and won 15 faceoffs. Brassie added one ground ball, Cook four ground balls and two takes, Donahoe four ground balls and one take, Goodberlet two ground balls, Quinn Kailbourne two ground balls and one take, Perryman three ground balls, Reese one ground ball, Smith three ground balls and one take, Trybuskiewicz three ground balls and Vengoechea one ground ball.
“The teams were evenly matched,” coach Goodberlet said. “Even when Wayne tied it in the fourth quarter, the boys still had confidence. We lost the first OT’s faceoff, but when we got to the second OT, I just knew Drew would not lose it again. He won the faceoff and the kids ran the play that we had drawn up between the OT sessions to a ‘T’”.
HF-L defeated Section VI team, Lakeshore/Silver Creek 11-7 in the state quarterfinal on June 3. The Cougars trailed 3-2 at the end of the first quarter, coming from a 2-0 hole early on goals by Trybuskiewicz and Perryman. Lakeshore was up 4-3 at halftime with HF-L’s only goal by Goodberlet in the second quarter. The Cougars took control in the third quarter on goals by Angelo and Perryman a minute apart that gave the club a 5-4 lead. After Lakeshore tied the game at 5-5, Kailbourne nd Trybuskiewicz scored for a 7-5 lead. Lakeshore narrowed the margin to 7-6 at the end of the third quarter. Goals by Kailbourne, Goodberlet, Perryman and Goodberlet again gave the club an 11-6 lead and the Cougars never looked back.
Goodberlet had three goals, Perryman three goals and two assists, Trybuskiewicz two goals and one assist, Kailbourne two goals, Angelo one goal, Brassie two assists, Steinhoff one assist and Donahoe one assist. Reese handled six saves. Angelo won 17 faceoffs to go with 15 ground balls and one take. Brassie had one ground ball and one take, Cook one ground ball and one take, Donahoe five ground balls, Hall two ground balls and two takes, Reese one ground ball, Smith three ground balls and two takes, Steinhoff one take and Vengoechea one ground ball.
“Possession was the key,” coach Goodberlet said. “Winning those faceoffs kept the ball out of the hands of their offense. But, we also had to keep possession of the ball and have some long possessions and be patient with our shots. They are very skilled and good stick handlers, so getting eight takes from them also helped us when they did have the ball.”
HF-L will play Jamesville-Dewitt of the Syracuse area in the state Class C semifinals on June 7 at SUNY Cortland. If they win, the finals would be Saturday, June 10.
