East Bloomfield Historical Society invites you to a free program “Demon Rum, John Barleycorn, and the Struggle for a Temperate America” on Thursday, September 19, 2019 at 7 p.m. at the Historical Society Academy Museum, 8 South Avenue in East Bloomfield.

Preston E. Pierce, Ontario Co. Historian, will start with the place of alcoholic beverages in our local and national lives from colonial days through the 19th Century. He will look at the various ways Americans (and New Yorkers) sought to control or eliminate the use of alcohol ending with the enactment of National Prohibition in 1919. Then the program examines what went wrong with prohibition, how and why it was repealed, and the lessons we may learn from the experience.
