Every minute counts in a structure fire so please help your local volunteer fire departments and clear at least 3 feet around your nearest fire hydrant this season.

With more snow in the forecast, fire department officials in Honeoye Falls, Lima, Mendon, Ionia, Rush, Scottsville, West Bloomfield and Pittsford ask residents to do this as it helps fire crews locate it quickly. In the event of a structure fire, firefighters need that quick access to the hydrant for continuous water supply. If they can’t see the hydrant or have to dig it out, that causes delays in getting the water they need to put the fire out. Clearing the snow could help save your property and perhaps lives in the event of a fire.

If residents see areas where hydrants aren’t cleaned out, it may be because senior citizens or those with disabilities live in nearby homes. In that case, be a good neighbor and clean it out or perhaps a Girl Scout or Boy Scout Troop could lend a hand and do so.
