A newly decorated bedroom, renovated powder room, and flat-screen TV are just a few of the improvements guests can now enjoy at Mendon’s only Bed & Breakfast: House Content B&B, at 388 Mendon Center Road in Mendon.

“The response has been wonderful,” says proprietor Gwenn Voelckers, who lives on site and warmly welcomes friends and family members of local residents, as well as business travelers. “When my neighbors run out of room, I’m here for them!” While many guests who stay at the B&B are visiting for graduations, weddings, and other family gatherings, others choose House Content for its close proximity to the Finger Lakes Region.

In addition to the previously mentioned renovations, a new roof and recently painted sunny-yellow exterior now enhance the B&B. Guests may also enjoy a new and beautifully landscaped back patio for reading and relaxing; a refurbished front porch for quieter moments; and, of course, all the comforts of central heat and cooling.

“I’ve also refreshed my breakfast buffet,” said Voelckers. “People are looking for healthier options these days, so I make sure to include Greek yogurt, seasonal fruits, granola, and oatmeal for breakfast. But no worries; I still offer plenty of homemade goodies and yummy local favorites, such as the incredible apple fritters from Mendon Meadows Market Place, scrumptious scones from Enjoy Coffee Sweets and Savories, and delicious muffins from Pittsford Farms Dairy and Bakery. I am a B&B after all, and we must never forget the all-important sweet tooth!”

Opened in 1995, House Content B&B is a little 1830’s historic gem, situated on a picturesque six-acre site, just south of Mendon Ponds Park. Special features of the B&B include:

Two lovely rooms, the most popular of which includes a queen size bed and private entrance.

A private powder room and a second full bath, with a relaxing Jacuzzi tub and shower, a perfect “his and her” arrangement.
A continental self-serve buffet breakfast that includes both bakery-fresh and healthy options. For folks who prefer a simpler start to their day, a “coffee-only” tray service is offered at a reduced rate.

Access to an adjoining living room that features a unique mix of antiques and whimsical modern accents, complete with a grand piano, fireplace and plenty of comfy seating for reading, relaxing, or watching TV/movies. Streaming Netflix is available.

A back patio with a soothing fountain and lovely shade garden for reading and staying cool.
Trail walking and bird watching just up the street in beautiful Mendon Ponds Park. Guests can also go for a walk or cross-country ski right out of House Content’s back door.

A wonderful “base camp” location for exploring the Finger Lakes. Within a short drive, guests can enjoy wine tastings, antiquing, hiking, skiing, golfing, shopping, kayaking, and much more.

Daily rates range from $130 – $145, plus tax, depending on the room and buffet vs. coffee-only option. “My goal is to keep rates affordable,” said Voelckers. “If people are on a budget or have made plans to join family for breakfast, the ‘coffee-only’ tray service can be a great choice.”

For over 20 years now, Voelckers has welcomed couples looking for a romantic retreat, families visiting relatives in the area, and business travelers. “Most folks just want a change of pace and a little uninterrupted time together, “ said Voelckers. “I’ve had guests from as far away as Newport Beach, California; but most are from right around the area. Many people want to get away for the weekend, without incurring the cost of airfare or the inconvenience of a long drive.”

Walking into House Content feels like the embrace of a warm hug. Classical music greets guests upon entering and a plateful of cookies invites inspection (and a second helping!). After unpacking, guests are welcome to enjoy the rest of the house and soon discover an interior that has as much style as it has substance: fine art alongside more playful pieces, antiques mixed with modern accents, and a color scheme that both soothes and inspires.

At House Content, guests have plenty to do in the area, or they can do nothing at all and just relax. “My guests are typically looking for a little peace and quiet and some time to themselves, versus the hustle-bustle of a large inn,” said Voelckers. “Given my small size, they have the common areas to themselves and can just chill.”

Operating her B&B is just a small part of Voelckers’ active life. Having recently retired from the University of Rochester’s Center for Community Health, she is now fully engaged in personal pursuits that reflect her passions: running House Content, conducting empowerment workshops for women who live alone, and leading group exercise classes at the YMCA.

“Retirement feels liberating,” exclaims Voelckers. “I can now pursue what really matters to me: Helping people whether it’s helping them find a room for the night, feel better about living alone, or get healthier through exercise. It’s incredibly rewarding, and I love doing my part to support and strengthen this wonderful community in which I live.”
