Honeoye Falls-Lima High School will host a tribute concert to Fred Sturm, the head of jazz studies at the Eastman School of Music, on Saturday, January 21, 2017 at 7:30 p.m.

Sturm, the head of jazz studies for 11 years at Eastman School before leaving in 2002 to become a professor at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin, was a Mendon resident. He passed away from cancer in August 2014. His two children graduated from Honeoye Falls-Lima.

The concert, titled Maestro: A Musical Tribute to Fred Sturm, was put together by HF-L high school instrumental teacher Mark Borden and Fairport High School band director Bill Tiberio. It will feature an All-Star Big Band with musicians Jeff Campbell, Tom Davis, Bill Dobbins, Jim Doser, Mark Kellogg, Clay Jenkins, Bob Sneider, Rich Thompson, Tiberio and John Viavattine along with Sturm’s son, Ike, and others whose lives were touched by Sturm. It will be at HF-L High School, 83 East Street in Honeoye Falls.

“He was a tremendously talented educator and writer and a dear friend to many of us in the area,” Borden said. “We will be performing a number of Fred’s compositions and sharing some personal remembrances.”

No tickets are required; admission is free but donations to The American Cancer Society will be accepted at the door.
