On the warm summer evening of this past September 1, we were holding court at our makeshift “office” on the sidewalk in front of our home overlooking the four corners of beautiful downtown Mendon when we enjoyed a stop-by visit from Sentinel reader Mike Burke.
Mike had an interesting local “lost and found” story that we thought we’d pass on to our readers. It shares some similarities with the 1957 Honeoye Falls High School yearbook story, which we tell in our (Word)Smiths feature this week, and that one had a happy ending, so let’s toss this one out there and see what happens.
Following up on our sidewalk conversation with an email, Mike wrote, “Here’s the background on that wedding ring we talked about when I stopped by your place. My wife Lynne & I had set out on a walk over by the soccer fields at Semmel Road Park in the spring of 2022. I decided to stop in the bif
f before we started & on the floor I discovered what appears to be a wedding ring.”
Mike posted his discovery on the HFNY & Mendon Facebook Community pages and also on NextDoor, but got no responses. He also sent info to Mendon Supervisor John Moffit and HF Mayor Rick Milne, as well as a local TV station, but none of these efforts produced viable leads.
We do have some specific clues in this mystery which we’ll have Mike share with you next…
“It’s a simple band. The inscription reads: ‘S.F.L. to R.O.B.’ and I’m pretty sure it’s ROB and not RDB, but it could be rDb maybe???”
There’s also a date on the ring, but we’re keeping that to ourselves for now – if you know the date and can offer a description that matches the ring, we’ll turn it over!
So there are your clues. At this point, we will unleash our Sentinel mystery solvers and see if anyone out there has any thoughts or strategies to identify the owner of this lost wedding ring. Please let us know.
