On Friday, April 1st, Honeoye Falls-Lima Graduate, Anthony Noto ’20, was honored by the Mid-American Conference (MAC) as the 2021-22 Freshman of the Year. Noto, who captured four consecutive New York State championships while at HF-L, made his debut with the Lock Haven University (LHU) men’s wrestling team this academic year.

In his first year, Noto was crowned as the MAC Champion at 125 pounds and compiled a 31-3 record. His season also included a 29-bout winning streak and a 7-0 record in MAC duals, as Noto’s contributions helped push LHU to both the MAC East Division title and the tournament championship for the first time in program history.

For the Bald Eagles, it marks the first time an LHU wrestler has taken home the award since The Haven first joined the conference in 2019.

Prior to the postseason, Noto was also listed among the top-10 most dominant wrestlers in Division I. The redshirt-freshman led the Bald Eagles with seven pins and was also the team’s co-leader with four tech falls.

Season Highlights

One of Noto’s season highlights came during the 2022 NCAA Wrestling tournament. Noto scored a 4-2 sudden-victory win over No. 16 Drew Hildebrandt of Penn State. Noto’s remarkable run fell just short against eventual NCAA champion Nick Suriano of Michigan.

In a similar dramatic fashion, Noto also brought home the MAC 125-pound crown in sudden victory over Clarion’s Joey Fischer. In the final minute of the first OT, he used a lift and a mat return to score the takedown and give LHU a crucial boost on the way to the team title.
