These youngsters look for clues. Submitted photo

On Tuesday night, March 13, 2018, 20 young investigators and a handful of adults thoroughly searched the Mendon Public Library for clues that might solve the mystery of The Secret of the Old Clock, the first book of the Nancy Drew mysteries. Designed by Mendon Public Library staffer, Lynette Loomis, and community volunteer, Mary Church, the program proved to be both challenging and fun for all who participated.

Counting clocks, looking for the hidden cash box, peaking into intricate dioramas, using invisible ink, even trying their hand at croquet, the young investigators sought answers to clues that filled in a secret message and solved the mystery.

Jenna, one of the program participants said, “It was a fun and challenging event.” Michael concurred, “I really liked how it was challenging. Number three clue, we still have to figure out!” Finley exclaimed, “It was awesome! I loved when you finally understood the clue!”

Following about an hour of sleuthing, the investigators enjoyed refreshments and talk of Nancy Drew. Frosted sugar cookies in the shape of magnifying glasses were the perfect treat after their thorough investigative work.

Other volunteers for the evening included: Lindsey Loomis-O’Brien as Nancy Drew; Maddie Wood as her best friend, Helen Corning; and Jesus Juarez as caretaker Tucker. Aileen O’Kelly made custom-designed sleuth cookies and Allene Lind created some of the clues. Keys were donated by Weiders Hardware with custom-made puzzles courtesy of Ellsworth Downs of Webster.
