The second-graders at Honeoye Falls-Lima’s Manor School celebrated Flag Day a few days early by presenting the annual patriotic show “America…A Proud Nation” last Thursday (June 11).
With a student portraying George Washington leading two other students who have “stumbled into being in the show”, the second-graders showed they have learned several facts about the United States. With the help of other students portraying such important people in the nation’s history as Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Betsy Ross, Susan B. Anthony and Sacajawea and also a student as Lady Liberty, the second-graders told the audience things about the nation such as the names of the states making up the United States. They also talked about the Preamble of the Constitution, the Gettysburg Address, King’s “I Have A Dream” speech and also the different branches of the military service as well as famous Americans.

Interspersed with their knowledge of the country, the students sang various songs. The students started with all of them singing “You’re a Grand Old Flag”. Mrs. Fleming’s class performed “The United States”. Mrs. Leonard’s and Mrs. Lynah’s class presented “The Star-Spangled Banner”. All of the second-graders recited the “Pledge of Allegiance” and sang “My Country ‘Tis of Thee”. Mrs. Cummings’ class performed “America, America”. The song “Yankee Doodle” was done by Mrs. Graney’s class. Following that was a slideshow set to the song “Thank You Solders” which all the second-graders sang while photos of military veterans, some of them family members of the students, were projected onto a screen. The “Taps Prologue” for those veterans who have passed away was recited by all the students. Mrs. Erickson’s class and Mrs. Filiatrault’s class sang “America the Beautiful”. Mrs. Ozcelik’s class performed the song “Famous Americans”. The finale of the program was the song “Proud to be an American” (also known as “God Bless the U.S.A.”
